RCA Reynolds601 Brickell Key DrMiami, FL 33131United StatesTo whom it may concern,
We currently study Media as one of our A Levels, understandably a crucial year to shape my futurecareer paths. My task for our final year consists of producing a music video in which we have to filmand edit all ourselves ensuring that the final piece is professional and meets the required standards.
The song “Invaders must die ”
is a fast tempo and upbeat song that targets my audience extremely well. Asdiscussed amongst our group, we had various ideas that can act towards such a great song, thisincludes colour, and various narrative themes.Understandably, my name would be on everything we do and as a result your music would beplayed a lot of people. It would be much appreciated if you could grant me permission to use your song.Kind regardsRamon Iglesias DiazContact info:Email: Diaz@live.comTelephone: 07903579773/ 07535208299

mise en scene

For my music video I wanted to have the antagonists be inspired from the film the Matrix that shows Agents who show little to no emotion and are essentially robots.

location search for music video

I wanted to film somewhere with various hills so I looked to Crystal Palace as it is famous for being built on 7 hills and therefore would have what I required to film my music video. I then looked at different park locations to determine which would be the best suited for my music video. I chose a combination of two as both had different features I wanted to use.

Deciding method to use

I weighed out all the advantages and disadvantages of the different ways I which I could conduct research into my target audience. I then came to the conclusion to use a questionnaire as this is a simple easy way to get honest feedback. I will be handing the questionnaire out to Year 7-Year 13 students at my School as well as some teenage friends who go to different schools.

Album cover editing process stage 3 final

This is my final album cover. I decided on the final edit using my feedback and theme of my album. After deciding on the final album cover I edited in the parental advisory sticker as seen on real album covers that contain explicit lyrics and this is also linked to my chosen genre.

Types of music video narrative

Narrative

A narrative music video is organised in a way which tells a story. A romance is the most common story-line in music videos. In a music video the narrative is usually simple and usually told without any dialogue as the music is playing simultaneously. Usually the music video relates to the lyrics in the song as it adds a visual element which can help explain the lyrics. An example of this is A-HA take on me, this follows a narrative using a unique animation technique that was revolutionary at the time.

Types of music video abstract

Abstract Music Videos
An abstract music video, unlike a narrative music video has no real connection to the lyrics and in many cases is quite artistic and distinctive. This allows the music video to be memorable and impressive to the audience. An example is Gary Jules’ cover of ‘Mad World’ which has children holding hands to make pictures from a bird’s eye view shot. It also has aspects of a performance video, but the main focus of attention is on the more abstract aspects. The video also relates largely to the song's lyrics, singing often about school and children which relates to the setting. But on the other hand the songs main meaning is of conformity and the tediousness of life, which is parly seen through the dull colour-scheme but is also contradicted due to the originality of the video. The music video is quite memorable due to its simplicity and originality. I think that an abstract video would be suitable my chosen genre(electronic) music video as its purpose is to stand out and be original, much like many indie bands which purposely stray from the ‘norm’.

Types of music videos performance

Performance Music Video
A performance music video is a band or artist who performs the music video while lip-syncing to the recording song above. This is the most common kind of music video as it allows artists to advertise themselves as a brand and the audience to familiarize themselves with them. A performance video can be used by all genres of music as all artists wish to promote themselves through their self image. An example of this is

Types of music video Hybrid video

Hybrid Music
Video A Hybrid music video is a combination of aspects from the other three video types, these are narrative, abstract, performance  This is extremely common in most music videos as many artists like to both tell a story and promote themselves at the same time. Having a hybrid video allows the audience to connect with both the band’s image and also the lyrics. An example of this is Blur’s song ‘Coffee and TV’ has aspects of all three genres. I would like to make a hybrid video as it would allow the video to be more interesting and memorable as it has aspects which would appeal to everyone.

Representation

Representation

  • Representation in the media is how a person is branded to give them symbolic power.
  • Everyone in the media is a representation of reality. How they are branded and created by producers is a technique used to sell an artist as a brand and appeal to a specific person in society.
  • A way in which a celebrity is portrayed is through symbolism and signs which are read by the audience to portray a certain aspect of a person’s life.
  • Representation is a two-way process: producers position a brand in relation to reality and audiences assess a text on its relationship to reality.
  • The concept of representation began in the 1960s, new socialist movements were make such as feminist and civil rights movements. During this time the concept of a teenager was created.
  • Many social groups were downgraded due to misrepresentation in the media and other institutes.
  • Research by Busby: ‘Sex Role Research in the Media’ was feminist research and highlighted misrepresentation in the media.
  • There was the question whether the media is fairly representing social groups in reality.
  • The audience don’t have to follow the symbols the brand made, but may follow certain aspects of it.
  • The Theory of Practice, Bourdieu. The relationship between knowing and doing, interpreting and using.

Chosen Genre and background information

For my chosen genre I have chosen Electronic music, this is because it encompass a wide range of different genres, with use of guitars, rap vocals, and several other cross overs it is one of the most diverse genres in use today, artists such as the prodigy, beck, Beastie boys, daft punk have shown how electronic music can range from almost all aspects of other genres whilst still being electronic music.

Electronic musicelectronic organ [Credit: r4Rick]any music involving electronic processing, such as recording and editing on tape, and whose reproduction involves the use of loudspeakers. Any music produced or modified by electrical, electromagnetically, or electronic means can be called electronic music. Historically, electronic music is one aspect of the larger development of 20th-century music strongly characterized by a search for new technical resources and modes of expression.Electronic music is represented not only by a wide variety of 20th-century works, and not only by serious concert pieces, but also by a substantial literature of theatre, film, and television scores and by multimedia works that use all types of audiovisual techniques. Perhaps the most important development in electronic music is the use of digital computers. The kinds of computers employed range from large mainframe, general-purpose machines to special-purpose digital circuits expressly designed for musical uses.

Star Image

Star Image
All Pop stars have a certain identity or persona which is not restricted to their musicianship. A true pop star has a lasting significance and has ‘brand awareness' among a wider market over a long period of time.

A stars image becomes a a recognized sign that is used through many different media forms. Artists use this to their advantage and will use their image as a meaning of allowing it to be used for advertising purposes.

Example-
Eminem continues this font throughout all of his advertising and merchandise; therefore his fans will be drawn towards these things if there is an existing image that he uses throughout his music.

Richard Dyers Theory-

1) Stars are artificial images which are constructed purely because they will know it will appeal to their target audience. Artists can be copied or parodied because of this certain image the artists are portraying.

'A Star is an image not a real person that is constructed (as other aspects of fiction is) out of a range of materials'

2) Industry and Audience
Stars are made to appeal to the audiences with will generate revenue for the artists record companies. Record companies nurture their stars, they shape their artists to what they think will appeal most the the artists target audience and to the general public.

'Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings'

3) Ideology and culture
Stars promote a certain ideology by the shared cultural values and attitudes that they represent. The audience will have interests in these values which will then enhance their 'Star Quality'. If the artists convey certain beliefs, ideas and opinions outside the music, it helps to create their star persona.

4) Character and Personality
The artists are simply constructed into stars. A star first begins as a 'real' human but they are then transformed into a star (construction). The stars provide audiences with a focus, which will make them appeal to the public. It is much easier for a pop star to establish their personality and character than a film star for example, purely for the fact that they have much more consistency. A pop stars persona is constructed but is continually reconstructed and reassessed. Second album syndrome is when an artist is unable to sustain their particular persona overtime.

Star image will be relevant to my work because we will consider many of these aspects when producing out music video, digi pack and magazine advert. When choosing our band members, we will need to think about what image they would have and what style would suit the band and appeal to the target audience. We will also need to think about what sort of a recognised sign that our band will use throughout all their albums and merchandise so that they will instantly be recognised by their fans.

We are going to support the theory of Star Image by using the same font throughout our digipak which will be widely recognised and associated with the band.

Album cover editing process stage 2

After cropping and applying several colors I then experimented with several different designs and filters. Tampering with different shades and colors I narrowed it down to three final ideas I liked the best. I then got feedback from friends to see what they thought.

Editing process of my album cover stage 1

The original picture of my album cover is a picture I took whilst in Burn Switzerland, it is a piece of graffiti on the wall, I was drawn to this as it fits in with genres conventions but also is very individual and looks like it could be on a actual album cover. I first enhanced the colors in Photo Shop and cropped the picture as to get the little girl. The original picture had very few colors on it, I wanted to change this and so i edited it in picmonkey.

Teacher feedback on website draft

My teacher gave me feedback on my website. The main issues I need to correct are the font style, to make sure it fits into with my album cover and also so it is the same style as it. Another thing to edit was the background, to get a better image and make sure it is view-able from all pages.
To amend theses issues I will chose a new template and design for the final website as my current website draft doesn't fit into my chosen genre.

Album covers with babies or young children

As I was deciding to make my album cover of a child drawn on a wall I researched several existing albums that also depicted infancy on a album cover. I withered down the vast number of results and chose only to use albums of which I was a fan of and had listened to. The majority of these albums use infancy to depict serious issues that are faced by grown ups and mankind as a whole. The illmatic album by Nas shows a picture of the rapper in a backdrop of the project that he grew up in. This shows where the album is coming from and the issues that he is facing whilst growing up in a poverty stricken neighborhood. The album tackles what he was going through at this moment in his life and how his environment has shaped him from infancy. The topics he talks about are gang violence, drug selling/abuse in the ghetto and New York city as a whole from his perspective. Without listening to the album you can gather the topics just from the picture, that is what i want my album cover to achieve.

The U2 album takes the pictures from another album titled WAR but I chose to put the greatest hits album cover as it conveys the image more clearly, as the other album requires a different album cover to feel the whole message. It depicts a small boy with a army hat on this is to show the violence in Ireland at the time with rebels groups such as the IRA and the brutality of the death, effectively calling Ireland a war-zone at the time with child soldiers as groups such as the Fenian's and IRA would recruit very young member's and would often die at very young ages. This again illustrates U2s point very clearly in a single image.

The Nirvana album, nevermind shows a baby floating in a vast pool of water trying to grasp a dollar bill. This shows how Nirvana feel that is what we are born to do, is to chase and acquire money. Again this shows the topics and themes of the album with one straight picture. I feel all these albums depict the themes clearly, some more so than others and this is ultimately what makes a good album cover to show the artists intent in just a single picture and is what I will try to emulate in my album cover that also features a small child.

Digipack resources

I was able to get a lot of information about dipipacks due to my family's extensive CD collection, I made a collage of my personal favourites that inspired me and of the collection I viewed to gather these on fotor.

Introduction

This is my second blog for A2 Media studies and this blog will keep you updated with my research and planning for my coursework based on  music videos. Research task will be carried out independently, just as the planning and music video, I will go to various locations of London and its surrounding suburbs to ensure my video meets the conventions whilst also subverting the conventions of a alternative music video. The research and planning will also be recorded onto the blog.
